Steve Hantzis began working his first union job in 1968 while attending Indiana University.  He worked summers and weekends at Roadway Express in Indianapolis and became an alternate steward for Teamsters Local 135.  After college he began teaching at the Indiana Boys School where he helped organize the staff into the Indiana State Teachers Association.  In 1974, Steve began working as a brakeman-conductor for the Penn Central Railroad (later Conrail) and served on the United Transportation Union’s Local 425 Safety Committee for eight years. 

In 1984, Steve became a National Organizer for the Communications Workers of America and organized public employees in Ohio.  In 1986, he joined the faculty of Indiana University Division of Labor Studies teaching at UAW Local 662 in Anderson.  In 1987, Steve accepted a position as a National Representative for the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) and in 1996 became the National Executive Director of that organization.  In 1991, Steve earned a Bachelors Degree from the George Meany Center for Labor Studies to compliment his earlier work at Indiana University in Political Science.  Following NFFE’s affiliation with the IAM, Steve joined the Grand Lodge staff in 2000 as a Special Representative in the Government Employee Department.  Steve presently works as a Grand Lodge Representative in the Organizing Department at IAM Headquarters.
