Meet the Staff of Safety and Health

Michael J. Flynn - Director IAM Safety and Health

Mike has been a member of the IAM since 1973 upon his employment with Eastern Airlines in Washington, DC. During his career as an airline mechanic, he served in various local lodge positions at both the Miami and Atlanta Maintenance base operations. In 1986 he was elected President of the Atlanta Air Transport Lodge 1690 and served through the duration of the historic 19 month strike. In 1991 he began his full time union career at Grand Lodge with IAM CARES. In 1996 he was appointed Director, Occupational Safety & Health, Apprenticeship and IAM CREST.

Michael G. Hinthorn - Outreach Coordinator / Instructor

Mike has been a member of the Machinists Union since his initiation into Local Lodge 1000 in February 1977 and was employed by General Electric in Bloomington Illinois. He served as Steward, Bargaining Committee Chairperson, Negotiating Committee Chairperson, Safety and Health Committee Chairperson, Local Lodge President, Trustee, Auditor and other positions in the District Lodge. He was assigned to IAM CREST in 1998 as a Project Coordinator and Instructor.

Teri McClendon - Project Coordinator / Instructor

Teri joined IAM CREST in 1999 as a Project Coordinator and Instructor. Teri has been a Machinists member from District Lodge 24 and Local Lodge 63 since 1976 when she started at Boeing in Portland, Oregon. Teri was an associate Instructor for IAM C.R.E.S.T. for 2 years. She served as a safety representative and a member of the HSI (Health and Safety Institute). She also served on the executive board at District Lodge 24.

Steven R. Fowee - Project Coordinator / Instructor

Steven joined IAM CREST in 2008 as a Project Coordinator and Instructor. He served for 10 years as the IAM Liaison assigned to the ICWUC Center for Worker Health and Safety Education in Cincinnati Ohio. Steven has been a member of the Machinists Union since 1988. He has served in many different capacities within Local Lodge #162 and District Lodge #34. Steven worked as a journeymen industrial electrician.

Stephen V. Rice - DOT Grant Liaison

Stephen has been a member of the Machinists Union since February of 1990 out of Local Lodge 1781 San Francisco Ca. He started his career with United Airlines on the ramp working domestic and international flights. Two years later he became a safety advocate. He served as Shop steward, President of Building Corp, Executive Board Chair and Chair of Flight and Ground Safety for the Western Region for Local Lodge 1781 and District 141. He was assigned to IAM CREST in September 2008 as the DOT Grant Liaison to airlines represented by the IAM for dangerous goods training for the airline industry.

Rosalie Ellgen - Program Manager Return to Work Projects

Rosalie has a M.A. in rehabilitation counseling, is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor registered with WA State Labor and Industries with 26 years experience in rehabilitation counseling and supervision skilled in human resources management. She is a member of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals and has served as a board member and president of the WA chapter. She has been a member of IAM Local Lodge 751-F since joining IAM CREST in 1999 providing rehabilitation counseling services for Boeing employees.

Steve McLoughlin - Director Black Car Training Grant

Steve has been the Director of the Black Car Safety Center since the inaugural class in October 2007. The Safety Center is located in Long Island City, NY. More than 7,000 drivers have now taken the Safety Center's comprehensive full-day safety program, which provides defensive driving, stress management and maintenance instruction. Steve began his work with the IAM District 15 in New York City in 1997. After working in District 15's groundbreaking work to fight for the rights of independent contractors under the leadership of DBR James Conigliaro. Steve became the District's Financial Director and coordinated the union's excellent health and pension funds.

Ira Stern - Program Manager Apprenticeship Project

Ira administers the IAM CREST Youth Transition to Work program, funded by the NJ Department of Labor working with IAM District 15, helping high school seniors learn about career opportunities as automotive and diesel technicians through apprenticeships. Ira attended the Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations and has many years of experience in education and labor. Prior to joining IAM CREST in 2009 he worked for various unions coordinating their education, training and legislative programs.
