ILO Committee on Freedom of Association - May 2005
The Committee examined 35 of the 120 cases before it. Among others:
- Cambodia: It urged the government to institute independent inquiries without delay in order to identify not only the perpetrators of the crimes of two trade union leaders, but also the instigators and to punish those responsible.
- Colombia: the Government is urged to put an end to the intolerable situation of impunity. Following a request from the Committee, the Colombian government invited the Committee Chairperson to visit the country.
- Myanmar (Burma): the government shall take real steps towards ensuring respect for freedom of association in law and in practice.
- Zimbabwe: the Committee requested the Government to allow mutual support missions. It noted with deep concern that the trade union situation has not changed and may even have worsened.
- China: The Committee called for the immediate release of Yao Fuxin and Xiao Yunliang, imprisoned and sentenced on account of their trade union activities. It asked the Chinese government to accept a direct contacts mission.
- Venezuela: the Committee called for the release of the President of the CTV. It also deplored interference in elections to the CTV executive committee and asked the government to recognize the CTV’s elected leadership.
