International Metalworkers'' Federation (IMF)

The International Metalworkers'' Federation (IMF) is the largest of all global union federations, representing more than 25 million workers in 200 unions from almost 100 countries throughout the world.  It provides a forum for bringing together unions from metalworking sectors in aerospace, shipbuilding, electronics, steel and auto.  Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the IMF has regional offices in Asia, South America, Eastern Europe, and Africa.

UNIONS MOBILIZE AGAINST MEXICAN LABOUR LAW REFORMS  -  The IMF joins the independent labour movement of Mexico in urging unions and their members to call on government leaders and Mexican Ambassadors to stop these reforms NOW!

GLOBAL UNION LABOUR FILM SHORTS 2011 DEADLINE APPROACHES  -  Submission deadline for the Global Union Labour Film Shorts 2011 is April 1.  The International Metalworkers' Federation calls on its affiliates to submit their videos to a one hour line-up of the best short films from around the world focused on unions fighting back against austerity cuts.  The line-up will be released in June online and in DVD.

UNIONS IN EUROPE OPPOSE AUSTERITY PLANS  -  In a week of action, unions in Europe are taking action against a European economic governance proposal being considered by EU leaders that will lead to futher austerity cuts across Europe.

TURKISH WORKERS LAUNCH MASS STRIKES AT 21 COMPANIES  -  Companies affiliated to the Metal Product Industrialists' Association (MESS) are the target of a massive strike launch by IMF affiliate, Birlesik Metal-ls, whose members are fighting for improved wages and working conditions in the metal industry. 

IMF AFFILIATES BACK AWU CAMPAIGN AGAINST RIO TINTO/ALCAN  -  Mining giant Rio Tinto feels the heat from global unions demanding the company to respect labour rights and international standards.

NOKIA TO ENTER TALKS ON POTENTIAL JOB LOSSES  -  Nokia announced it will begin talks in Finland on potential job cuts in late April; workers fear drastic cuts following the company's decision to change operating system.

BRIDGESTONE DECLARES WAR AGAINST SOUTH AFRICAN METALWORKERS  -  Bridgestone South Africa locks out workers at two production sites in Brits and Port Elizabeth.  The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) believe this is a declaration of war by Bridgestone in response to wage increases achieved by workers in September 2010.

MEXICAN PARLIAMENT CONSIDERS REGRESSIVE LABOUR LAW REFORMS  -  The International Metalworkers' Federation joins with the independent trade union movement in Mexico in denouncing proposed labour law reforms that could go before parliament as early as this week.  The "reforms" will severely erode workers' rights in Mexico and must be stopped.

SLOVENIAN UNIONS PROTEST INTRODUCTION OF NEW FORM OF PRECARIOUS WORK  -  The Association of Free Trade Union of Slovenia, including IMF-affiliated SKEI, are protesting against the Slovenian government's attempts to introduce a new force of precarious work and call for protest letters in solidarity.

ROMANIAN UNIONS PROTEST AGAINST CHANGES IN THE LABOUR CODE  -   Some 8,000 people were in the streets of Bucharest protesting against the Government's decision to introduce changes in the Labour Code that will weaken collective bargaining rights and lead to increased precarious employment.

SENDING SOLIDARITY DONATIONS TO TRADE UNION MEMBERS IN JAPAN  -  Under the umbrella of JTUC-RENGO, IMF-JC and other trade unions in Japan have set up a special account to receive donations for trade union members who have lost so much as a result of the 2011 Eastern Japan earthquake and tsunami.

GFA SIGNED WITH NORSK HYDRO  -  Metal and energy workers sign Global Framework Agreement with Norsk Hydro ASA, a leading global supplier of aluminium products and energy solutions.

SOLIDARITY WITH JAPANESE METALWORKERS FOLLOWING DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE  -  IMF sends message of condolence and solidarity to its Japanese affiliate, union members and their families, following the massive earthquake and tsunamis that caused untold devastation and damage to the eastern part of Japan.

HANJIN SHIPYARD WORKERS CONTINUE STRIKE AGAINST MASS DISMISSAL - 
HHIC workers in Korea continue their struggle against mass dismissal conducted by the management in violation of a local collective bargaining agreement on the company's restructuring redunancy policy.

CHILEAN GOVERNMENT RENEGES ON MINE SAFETY STANDARDS  -  ICEM and IMF demand reform of mine health and safety in Chile, starting with the ratification of ILO Convention 176, the Safety and Health in Mines Convention.  Join in and send a message to the Chilean government through LabourStart today.

UAW REACHES NEW AGREEMENT WITH CATERPILLAR  -  UAW members approved a new six year agreement with Caterpillar Inc.

DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR GLU MASTERS APPLICANTS  -  The Global Labour University (GLU) invites trade unionists and labour activists to apply to a Masters in Labour and Globalization at the University of Kassel and the Berlin School of Economics.  The final deadline for applications for the German-based programme is April 1, 2011.

THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY  -  As women and unions around the world celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day 2011, the International Metalworkers' Federation calls for greater inclusion and involvement of women in all trade union structures.  This year IMF regional meetings will include half day meetings to discuss issues surrounding women, culminating in an IMF women's conference in December.

GERDAU FIRES UNION ORGANIZERS AT COLOMBIA PLANT  -  The Gerdau Workers' World Council is calling on unions in all Gerdau plants to send letters to plant managers demanding an end to anti-union activities at the Gerdau plant in Tocancipa, Colombia.

ACINDAR SETS BENCHMARK FOR ARCELORMITTAL IN LATIN AMERICA  -  Two years after establishing a joint health and safety committee, ASIMRA and UOM have established an excellent joint approach to health and safety with ArcelorMittal management at the Acindar Steel Plant in Argintina, setting a benchmark for other facilities in Latin America.

LABOUR VIOLATIONS IN MEXICO ON THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AGENDA  -  EMF and IMF representatives meet with Cortes Lastra, Member of European Parliament and chair of the Delegation to the EU-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee, seeking support for imporoved labour rights in Mexico.

MOVING FORWARD TO REVIVE THE GM/OPEL NETWORK  -  Participants from all major GM/Opel sites meet in Russelsheim, Germany to discuss the revival of the GM Network, the need for an IFA and demand the expansion of the European Works Council (EWC) to a World Employee committee (WEC).

EMF CALLS FOR ECONOMIC SANCTIONS AGAINST BELARUS  -  According to the European Metalworkers' Federation, the Netherlands is Belarus' second biggest trade partner after Russia.  Its share in total Belarus exports is 11.1 per cent.  EMF calls for the introduction of economic sanctions against Belarus.  Stopping the oil transit to the Netherlands would be the most effective form of pressure on the regime.

LOS MINEROS' JUAN LINARES RELEASED FROM JAIL  -  One week after unions from some 40 countries around the world took action in defense of labour rights in Mexico. SNTMMSRM union leader Juan Linares, who has been illegally imprisoned for more than two years, is released from prison.

PRECARIOUS WORK PROTESTS IN GERMANY  -  Over 210,000 workers protest against precarious work in Germany this February.  The nationwide protests are organized by IG Metall and are directed against the gorwing threat of precarious employment.

MORE THAN 50,000 RALLY FOR GLOBAL DAYS OF ACTION ON MEXICO - Mexican and foreign political leaders and Ambassadors took notice as unions from every part of the globe turned out at Mexican Embassies, national parliaments and congressional halls to voice their concern about the Mexican government's increasingly violent attitude towards independent trade unions.

MEXICAN MINERS AND ELECTRICIANS UNITE! - Los Mineros (SNTMMSRM) and the Mexican Electrical Workers (SME) announce historic alliance to strengthen and expand democratic labour movement in Mexico.

TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND WORKERS MARCH TO PARLIAMENT IN INDIA - In a historic March to Parliament on February 23, 2011 around 200,000 working people of India rallied in New Delhi demanding control on price rise, strict enforcement of labour laws, linkages of employment protection with the stimulus package, universalisation of social security, enhanced social security fund and to stop privatisation of central public sector enterprises.

GAMMON GOLD DISPUTE IN MEXICO RESOLVED - Mexican Miners' Union achieves new two year collective agreement with Gammon Gold, ending a eight month long strike at the El Cubo mine.

FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS UNDER ATTACK IN WISCONSIN, USA - Opposition to the anti-union onslaught against public sector workers in Wisconsin, USA goes global, as unions from around the world protest Governor Scott Walkers's plan to deny democracy and fundamental rights.

NEW AGREEMENT REDUCES WORKING TIME AT TENARIS IN BRAZIL - A new agreement reached with Tenaris in Brazil sees a reduction of working time with no loss of wages, however at the Calgary plant in the U.S. the company has been uncooperative and is imposing lay-offs and mandatory shutdowns.

HUNDAI ORDERED TO RECOGNIZE PRECARIOUS WORKER AS A DIRECT EMPLOYEE - After another successful ruling in the courts in South Korea, KMWU is demanding that Hyundai bring all its subcontracted workers into direct employment.

WORKERS AT GERDAU CONTINUE TO RESIST PLANT CLOSURES - While workers at a Gerdau facility in Duitama have secured jobs after an 18 month struggle, in Cali the struggle to keep a Gerdau plant open continues.

SIGN-UP TO LABOURSTART MEXICO APPEAL - LabourStart launches Act NOW campaign on trade union rights in Mexico in support of the global days of action called by IMF, ICM, ITF, UNI and ITUC and taking place from February 14 to 19.

TASK FORCE TAKES STEPS TOWARDS NEW GLOBAL UNION - Joint IMF-ICEM-ITGLWF task force meets in Japan to examine the process to unify the world's industrial workers into one global union federation.

INDIAN TRADE UNIONISTS URGE QUEBEC AUTHORITIES TO BAN ASBESTOS EXPORTS - Indian trade unionists called on the Quebec Assistant Deputy Minister of Economic Development to stop serving the asbestos industry and ban exports of asbestos to Asia as asbestos is deadly and it is a myth that it can be safely used.

HIGH COURT INVESTIGATES DEATHS OF SHIPBREAKING WORKERS IN BANGLADESH - High Court questions employer and government authorities following the massive explosion at the Bangladesh Shipbreaking yard on January 18, that killed four people and injured many more.


INTERNATIONAL FRAMEWORK AGREEMENT SIGNED WITH ELECTROLUX - Swedish affiliate IF Metall has signed an International Framework Agreement with Swedish appliance manufacturer Electrolux on behalf of the IMF.

INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY FOR MEXICAN JOHNSON CONTROL WORKERS - The International Metalworkers' Federation joined with other labour and rights groups in taking further steps to protect the rights and safety of workers, Mexican Miners' Union members and labour rights activists at Johnson Controls in Puebla, Mexico.

JURA CORPORATION READY TO ENGAGE IN TALKS WITH ITUA - In response to pressure from Jura Corp Russia, ITUA activists held a picket and called for solidarity.  The management received numerous faxes from unions and other organizations including the IMF.  The company was warned by the District Attorney.  As a result, Jura announced it was ready to engage in talks with the union.

WSF: ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE - Over 70,000 people are participating in this years' World Social Forum, taking place in Dakar, Senegal from February 6 to 11, where a debate on what kind of economic system is better to serve society globally is taking place.

EXPLOSION AT VALE COPPER CLIFF SMELTER COMPLEX - The Ontario Ministry of Labour will investigate the cause of the explosion which resulted in closure of one of the furnaces.

UGT AND CC.OO REACH SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC AGREEMENT IN SPAIN - IMF affiliates UGT and CC.OO signed a social and economic tripartite agreement with the Spanish Government and employers' organizations CEOE-CEPYME.  Thanks to the unions' efforts the Government revised its original approach based on EU imposed drastic adjustments plans foreseeing revision among others of the existing system of pensions and collective bargaining.

UNIONS CALL FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE IN EGYPT - IMF joins with other GUFs in a demonstration outside the Egyptian mission in Geneva as part of the ITUC's Global Day of Action in support of democracy in Egypt.

INDONESIAN WORKERS MARCH FOR BETTER SOCIAL SECURITY AND AGAINST PRECARIOUS WORK - More than 10,000 Indonesian workers marched in the streets of Jakarta demanding social security reforms and abolishment of precarious work on February 6, 2011.

280 TEMPORARY WORKERS REGULARIZED AT TATA MOTORS, INDIA - In an agreement reached between Telco Workers' Union, affiliate of Indian National Metalworkers' Federation (INMF), and TATA Motors, 280 workers had been upgraded as regular employees at Jamshedpur Plant in India.

GM DAEWOO WORKERS' STRUGGLE SETTLES - GM Daewoo signs agreement reinstating 15 members of the precarious workers chapter of the Korean Metal Workers' Union (TMWU).  The struggle for direct employment and the regularization of in-house subcontracted workers will continue, but this agreement represents an important victory for the workers.

MEXICAN WORKERS DEMAND CHANGE - 50,000 people marched in the streets of Mexico City on January 31 demanding economic and political changes that better protect the rights and needs of Mexican people.  The struggle for workers' rights in Mexico will continue with Global Days of Action from February 14 to 19.

AGREEMENT IS REACHED AT VALE - United Steelworkers win bitter 18-month battle in Canada.  Unionized workers at Voisey's Bay nickel mine in Labrador, Canada vote 88 per cent for approval of the tentative five year agreement with the Brazilian transnational giant Vale.

NEW DOCUMENTARY ON SHIPBREAKING SUBMITTED TO UNIONS IN MOTION FILM FESTIVAL - The Mumbai Port Trust Dock and General Employees Union (MPTDGEU) release a new film "Into the Graveyard".  The 20 minute documentary on shipbreaking has been submitted to the EMF "Unions in Motion: film festival in Germany in June this year.

THOUSANDS OF METALWORKERS ACROSS ITALY PARTICIPATE IN GENERAL STRIKE - FIOM-CGIL held a national strike of metalworkers in Italy on January 28, 2011 in defence of the National Collective Agreement and for the protection of workers' rights.

MALAYSIAN ELECTRONICS WORKERS SECURE UNION RIGHTS - The newly formed Electronics Industry Workers' Union (Southern Region) successfully campaign to secure union rights at ST Microelectronics in Muar, Malaysia.

FOUR MEXICAN MINERS' UNION MEMBERS ILLEGALLY DETAINED - Four members of the Mexican Miners' Union were violently and illegally detained on January 26, 2001.  Demanding union rights in Mexico, IMF, ICEM, ITF and UNI release campaign posters and pamphlets in support of Global Days of Action on February 14 to 19.

IMF AND ICEM VISIT UMICORE PLANTS IN SOUTH AFRICA - IMF and ICEM visit the Umicore plants in Port Elisabeth, South Africa, January 24 to 26, as part of the implementation of the Umicore International Framework Agreement.  Due to recent issues between local management and trade unions at the plants, the visit proved essential in delivering positive and constructive results for workers.

WORKERS' RIGHTS DEFENDERS UNDER ATTACK IN MEXICO - The International Metalworkers' Federation joins with a network of solidarity authorities demanding protection of the life and integrity of labour rights advocates under threat in Mexico.

KGB BLOCKS THE WORK OF INDEPENDENT UNIONS IN BELARUS - On January 14, 2011, six representatives of the KGB turned up at the headquarters of REP, an IMF affiliate in Belarus.  Having removed mobile phones of employees during the five hour search the authorities also confiscated computers, hard drives and other electronic storage media owned by the union, almost completely paralyzing the union's work.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT SOUTHERN PERU, GRUPO MEXICO - A worker at the Toquepala opencast mine has died after a landslip from an area that has experienced repeated rock falls.  The IMF calls for those responsible to be brought to justice.

In the evening of December 19, mass demonstrations were staged in Minsk.  Four trade unionists were arrested.  The IMF demands the immediate release of Michal Kovalkov, Alexei Kovun, Vladimir Sergeev and Alexander Tysevich and an end of the violations of fundamental human rights in Belarus.

Bitter Christmas for Mexican workers

IMF has received reports of renewed attacks against trade unionists and activists these last days in Mexico.  Jose Luis Solorio, General Secretary of the new democratic Honda union in El Salto, Jalisco was fired; Jorge Mora, elected trade union leader in the Platosa Mine in la Sierrita, Durango also fired and his co-workers intimidated; in Puebla, the office of labour activists CAT, Centre for Worker Support was ransacked and robbed.  IMF calls on the affiliates to send strong protest letters to support the Mexican workers fighting for freedom of association and justice.

Shipbuilding workers need a level playing field for sustainable jobs

IMF shipbuilding/breaking sector will take action to promote OHS and green jobs in the shipbuilding/breakinig industry next year in Istanbul, Turkey.  The IMF Shipbuilding Action Group also decided to have a deeper discussion to achieve a level playing field for sustainable jobs.

NUMSA REACHES AGREEMENT ENDING AUTO STRIKE  -  IMF affiliate National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) ended their eight day strike after the Automobile Manufacturers Employers' Organization (AMEO) agreed to raise workers pay by 10 per cent in 2010. 

VICTORY FOR WORKERS! AGREEMENT REACHED AT JOHNSON CONTROLS IN MEXICO  -  IMF welcomes new agreement between Johnson Controls and the Mexican Miners' Union ensuring the reinstatement of workers beaten and forced to resign on August 16 and the August 27 deadline to formally rescind the protection contract with COS and recognize the Mexican Miners' Union.  

FATALITY AT ARCELOR MITTAL PLAN OVERSHADOWS VISIT OF GLOBAL COMMITTEE  -  The death of a worker at the ArcelorMittal steel plant in Kryviy Rih on August 19 during the visit of the Global Joint Health and Safety Committee highlights the need for greater vigilance by management and workers alike.

SSANGYONG MOTOR UNION LEADERS REMAIN IN JAIL  -  Following an appeal from the IMF affiliated KMWU the Seoul High Court released 21 union activists, three other union leaders are still in jail.

WORKERS OPPOSE EMPLOYMENT LAW CHANGES IN NEW ZEALAND  -  Thousands of workers participated in the rallies organized by the IMF New Zealand affiliate EPMU against changes proposed by the government to the employment law. The rallies are a part of a nationwide union campaign 'Fairness at Work'.

IMF EXPRESSES SOLIDARITY WITH THE SAN JOSE MINERS  -  The International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF) expresses solidarity with the 33 workers trapped 700 meters underground in the San José mine since August 5. 

IMF MEETING IN ARGENTINA ON TRADE UNION NETWORKS AND IFAs  -  IMF affiliates in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico have formulated an action plan on International Framework Agreements (IFAs). An IG Metall colleague will help them build trade union networks.

AIRWAYS DEMOCRATIZED IN BRAZIL  -  The ABC Metalworkers' Union, affiliate to CNM-CUT, launches new workers' TV channel in Brazil under the slogan "a TV que te vê" or "the TV that sees you", creating a new democratic space for public debate on social issues.

"NO TO AUSTERITY - PRIORITY FOR INDUSTRIAL JOBS AND GROWTH"  - 
European unions, including metalworkers, will mobilize on September 29 in a Day of Action against the excessive austerity measures being pursued by European governments.

MEXICAN MINERS WIN IMPORTANT VICTOR AT CANANEA  - 
The miners' union has won an injunction confirming the legality of the strike at the Cananea mine. The miners who were forcibly removed by the police in June have returned to the mine and are continuing their strike. 

THAI AFFILIATE SEEKING TO BUILD STRONG NATIONAL UNION STRUCTURE  - 
Leaders of union federations and plant unions participated in an IMF workshop to discuss restructuring of the Thai metalworkers union, TEAM, which was established ten years ago and is made up of in-house unions. 

RENEWED ATTACKS ON JOHNSON CONTROL WORKERS  - 
IMF expresses alarm and calls for urgent letters of condemnation in response to violent attacks on August 16 against union leaders and members at the Johnson Controls Interiors plant in Puebla, Mexico. 

HEARING ON ANTI-UNION DISMISSALS AT SINTER METAL WORKERS ADJOURNED TO OCTOBER  - 
International human rights lawyer joins IMF and EMF trial monitor to observe hearing. Judge adjourns proceedings to October 22 but also orders police summons for management witnesses. Union response: "Justice Delayed is Justice Denied"

UNIONS CALL ON CANADA TO STOP DUMPING ASBESTOS IN ASIA  -  The campaign to ban asbestos use in Asia took a step forward at a Building and Wood Workers' International regional conference in Jakarta on August 2 to 4, 2010. TWO SHIPBREAKING WORKERS DIE IN PAKISTAN  -   Two shipbreaking workers in Gadani, Pakistan die following an industrial accident on July 30, six are left with severe burns. The Shipbreaking Democratic Workers' Union held a demonstration on August 1 attended by a large number of workers from the different Gadani Yards.

KMWU SECURES WAGE INCREASE AT HYUNDAI  -   KMWU members voted to accept wage deal that includes 4.87 per cent increase on the base salary, bonus payments and 30 Hyundai Motor shares to each worker.

SOLIDARITY CARAVAN MARKS 3 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF CANANEA STRIKE  -  The Mexican Miners' Union and the Mexican Electrical Workers' Union agree to form a strong trade union front in Mexico, starting with sending a solidarity caravan to Cananea to coincide with the third anniversary of the mine workers' strike that began on July 30, 2007.

UNIONS DEFEND COLLECTIVE BARGAINING RIGHTS IN CROATIA  -   During a two week campaign, Croatian labour unions collected over 800,000 signatures for a referendum on labour law amendments due to the governments' unilateral proposal for changes in the Labour Code which would allow for easier cancellation of collective agreements.

SHIPBREAKING WORKERS STRIKE IN PAKISTAN  -  
Gadani shipbreaking workers strike for two days in July after employers renege a promise to negotiate better working conditions; negotiations have resumed and a court hearing is scheduled for July 21.
