Task force discusses path towards new global union  -  A joint task force set up by the decision-making bodies of IMF, ICEM and ITGLWF meets in Germany to explore a process to unify the world's industrial workers into one global union federation. [September 23, 2010]

Decision on reinstating Hyundai workers deferred again  -  Dismissed Hyundai workers in Chennai await decision on reinstatement again. Earlier a global meeting of Hyundai/Kia trade union representatives met to strengthen the global trade union network. [September 23, 2010]

Gerdau workers take global action demanding safety improvements  -  Workers protest, hold minute of silence in Spain, Colombia, Canada, Chile and Brazil after a worker died on September 5 at a Gerdau plant in Spain. [September 23, 2010]

Austrian metalworkers begin negotiations for a fair pay rise  -  PRO-GE to demand wage increases and reductions in working time in the forthcoming round of collective bargaining for 165,000 workers in the metal sector. [September 22, 2010]

Steel workers taking action in Germany  -  85,000 German steel workers and members of IMF affiliate IG Metall start warning strikes in support of their collective bargaining demands for a six per cent wage increase and equal treatment of agency workers. [September 22, 2010]

Independent legal brief filed in support of Mexican Miners' Union  -   Prominent global network of legal experts calls on Mexican Supreme Court to respect mineworkers' union autonomy. [September 22, 2010]

Unions secure record wage increases in Brazilian auto sector  -  40,000 metalworkers in the São Paulo region working for Ford, Scania, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz secure biggest wage increase in history. Los Mineros fighting for justice in Mexico  -  Workers have little to celebrate on Mexico' 200th Day of Independence, as the Mexican Miners' Union holds its 15th National Forum in Cananea to show support for striking workers who suffered their most recent violent attack on their rights one week earlier. South African motor industry strike ends  -  The two week nationwide strike by motor industry workers has ended after the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) reached a negotiated settlement with employers. [September 17, 2010]

Japanese unions to organize precarious workers  -  IMF's Japanese affiliate IMF-JC wants to improve the working conditions of precarious workers and makes a strong international commitment in its new Action Program. JAW plans to organize 26,000 non-regular workers in the automotive industries. [September 17, 2010]

Conference calls for recovery focused on jobs  - Unions call for concrete action following the International Labour Organization and the International Monetary Fund conference on employment. [September 16, 2010]

ILO sounds the 'death knell for asbestos'  -  A statement from a United Nations body confirming its desire to see the end of asbestos use worldwide is the 'death knoll' for a substance which claims one life every five minutes around the clock, the global union confederation ITUC has said.
