July 22, 2008 - Few of us in Sawtown over the age of 18 use the library. With longer work days, and more hectic family life, what with the kid’s band practice, hockey games, and baseball, there’s little time left for reading, picnics, or the more relaxed aspects of life. It’s almost to the point that the only relaxation available is sitting in the doctor’s waiting room or waiting for the dentist as she moves from one patient’s cubicle to another.
May 15, 2008 - These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated. Common Sense, December 23, 1776.
April 7, 2008 - Contrary to popular myth a “carbon footprint” isn’t something left by a tyrannosaurus rex a few thousand years ago. Neither is it the black skid mark left by a Mustang going from o to 60 in under 6 seconds once the light turns green. Rather it is a measure of the amount of green house gases, measured in units of carbon, resulting from human activity.
March 1, 2008 - In 2000, Vice President Al Gore was on television. He announced that he would not appeal and continue his legal fight to become President of the United States of America. He wasn’t our favorite candidate but far better than the Republican alternative. All the Democrats I knew were angry. Why should the Democrats give up without a fight?
January 14, 2008 -There was a time when “Mom and Pop’s” dominated the industry.
November 1, 2007 - There was a time when the comment attributed to Brant Olson in your article was correct. But that time is long past. The globe is now replete with certification systems, most of which are under either the FSC or the PEFC umbrellas. These systems offer consumers a wide variety of options as is required for markets to operate efficiently.
October 24, 2007 - In inflation adjusted numbers, prices for many wood products today are the lowest ever. As would be expected, lay-offs and mill closures are on the rise.
PRESS RELEASE - Olympia, Washington, March 7, 2007 - The Log truckers bills supported by the Northwest Log Truckers Cooperative and the IAM-Woodworkers Union, District W-1, received a legal boost on Friday when the Washington State Supreme Court rejected the Washington Truckers Association (WTA) argument that federal truck deregulation law preempt state action regarding prevailing wage law for truckers in an unpublished decision.

April 10 - 2007 - Illegal logging is an important issue facing every wood worker. Illegally logged fiber threatens our jobs and our employers.
Returning to Stumptown after being gone for far too long is like putting on that old pair of shoes forgotten in the closet. They just fit perfectly (I’m so glad I stopped her from throwing them away).
President Washington when he was sworn in as the first President of the US caused quite a stir by not wearing one of his many suits fashioned by Europe’s best tailors.
This month members at GP in the mid-continent held their noses and voted in a contract with a massive concession on health insurance.
A Play in one Act - Act 1 Scene 1: Our story takes place in front of 602 Cedar Street a two story Victorian built in 1902 for the plant manager of the Sawtown Lumber Company for the unbelievable sum of $28,000.
I was a Sawtown delegate to an economic conversion conference a few decades ago.
The changing seasons mean different things to different people in Sawtown.
According to the Almanac, Sawtown is in for a cold winter.
The paper reported the death of 8 more US soldiers today. Once again, a coffin returned to Sawtown with the remains of another of our children.
The volunteer organizing committee’s report was concise. After three months of interviews they had talked to about half of the workers in the local’s targeted worksite. Best they could tell 20% were very strong pro-union. About 20% were equally as strong anti-union with the rest, 60% completely undecided.

The local lodge meeting followed the same agenda it had for three decades. The meeting started on Sunday afternoon since that was the only time everyone was off.
June 1, 2006 - IAM organizers scored an election victory this week in Bend, Oregon that holds the prospect of bringing in additional members as the manufacturing facility goes forward with plans to expand production.
Ninety minutes the other side of midnight and the heat was still unbearable. Anheuser Busch was doing all they could to provide relief from the temperature but on this particular night it was a losing battle.
While frequently a rhetorical question this time it is for real. In Wright City a sudden rash of disciplines and discharges have raised a number of key questions.
