Sawtown Report V3 N4 - Two Forms of Patriotism

Mon. May 19, 2008

These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated.  Common Sense, December 23, 1776.

I have never crossed a picket line. I have never crossed a picket line.
I march in the Memorial and 4th of July parades. I march in rallies to stop the illegal occupation in Iraq.
I have an “I support our troops” and an American flag decal on my SUV and my pick up. I have a “Support the troops, bring them home alive” bumper sticker on my hybrid.
I support the NRA. I support the ACLU.
I have reported to Homeland Security items that I thought were suspicious involving two guys who looked like Muslims. I have written to my members of Congress to oppose the Patriot Act and other abuses of our constitution.
I am a smart consumer and always get the best deal. I read the labels to see where the products are made.
I support political candidates who promise to make us safe by enhancing the authority of our police and other law enforcement agencies. I support political candidates who promise to make us safe by reducing poverty here and abroad.
My wife sends care packages to soldiers from our town who are serving in Iraq. My wife reads to vet’s who have been seriously injured in the illegal occupation at our local Vet’s hospital.
I vote for ballot measures to build more prisons. I vote for ballots to increase spending for education and teacher salaries.
I think we deserve a gas tax holiday and better roads. I think we need better mass transit and safer bicycle lanes.
Government regulations are destroying our economy. Huge corporations are destroying jobs and our democracy.
I am a patriot. I am a patriot.
