Builders and Woodworkers International (BWI)
The IAM is affiliated with the BWI, which is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. BWI consists of unions from the building and wood workers industry, with a membership of over 11 million from 270 unions from 124 countries, including North America unions, Steelworkers (representing Canadian wood and US paper workers), Sheet metal Workers, Ironworkers, LUNA and Teamsters
The IAM is represented on the BWI World Council, and the Forestry Sub Committee.
Among the issues that the BWI is working on is:
- Including labour standards in forest certification and timber products from sustainable managed forests
- The rights of indigenous people as laid down in ILO Convention 169
- Global Framework Agreements and Corporate Social Responsibility
- Adequate occupational health and safety measures and accident prevention
- Assisting the IAM win the right to represent workers at the Swedwood operation in Danville VA
