Stimulus Dollars Fanning China Wind Farms

Tue. November 24, 2009

Recent news reports show stimulus funds are being used to create jobs in China and further decimate the U.S. manufacturing base.

Several companies, including General Electric Co. (GE) and Texas-based Cielo Wind Power LP, have announced a joint venture with China to create a $1.5 billion, 600-megawatt wind farm in Texas. The American companies are using $450 million worth of stimulus funds to manufacture wind turbines in China and ship them to the U.S. The deal was signed despite the stimulus package’s “Buy American” clause and congressional and White House claims the funds would only be used to support jobs at home.

The news comes just months after G.E. CEO Jeffrey Immelt announced plans to close its aviation repair facility in Albuquerque, NM, leaving 400 IAM members without jobs and issuing yet another blow to the future of U.S.-made technology.

One would think that since it is taxpayers money (stimulus funds) that is being used by these companies, that it would be restricted to be used within our borders only, as to get the most bang for the buck. The respective Company makes money and the worker makes money, relieving the State from Unemployment support. That is the intention and purpose of the stimulus package after all, isn\'t it? An exception should perhaps be made to free trade rules against protectionism when Public Moneys are being used under these dire economic circustances. The down side, though, is that other countries will do the same. This both bites and sucks.
