Sole Survivor – The Amazing Story of Flight 349

Thu. October 29, 2009

Individuals often look back upon retirement. Retired IAM Organizer Phil Bradley, 83, recently spoke to a local newspaper about his experience 50 years ago when he was the sole survivor of an airline crash, and how he continues to honor his fellow passengers.

The Winston-Salem Journal published an article about Phil Bradley, and his recall of the fateful day when Piedmont Airlines Flight 349 slammed into a mountain, killing the three-member crew and 23 other passengers. Bradley was returning home to Roanoke, VA, from an organizing drive in Oklahoma City, OK.

Bradley co-wrote a book in 1997, The Crash of Piedmont Flight 349 into Buck’s Elbow Mountain, and maintains a website, solesurvivor.info, to tell his story and memorialize his fellow passengers. He’s also set up a memorial for the passengers who weren’t so lucky.

On October 31, Bradley will host a ceremony at the memorial in Crozet, VA, just 500 feet from the scene of the crash.
