American Workers Want a Union Contract

Fri. March 16, 2007

March 16, 2007 - As the battle over the Employee Free Choice Act heats up – a new report from the Economic Policy Institute shows workers want to join a union NOW, more than any time in the recent past.

Workers are taking note of the benefits that come with a union contract – including better wages, job security and better working conditions.

In 2005, 53 percent of non-union workers said they wanted a union – while only one-third said they would have voted against a union contract.

In comparison, only one-third of non-union workers wanted a union in 1984.

A study out of Harvard University shows if workers were provided the union representation they desired in 2005, than the unionization rate would be about 58 percent – far higher than the actual rate.

In the mid-90’s, that number was just 44 percent.
