Schools Picking Up Slack for Uninsured Children

November 20, 2007 – With President Bush refusing to sign a bill expanding the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), academic performance is suffering as many educators throughout the country spend time and effort to find affordable medical care for many of their students.

A recent article on MiamiHerald.com says school officials must increasingly, “help find healthcare, arrange transportation for sick children and often advise beleaguered parents about the health consequences of their inaction.” Lack of action could cause schools to lose students to prolonged absences.

The Senate and House, for the second time, have passed legislation providing an additional four million children with health insurance by expanding SCHIP by $35 billion.

The new SCHIP legislation contains only minor changes from the version Bush vetoed, containing the original funding levels to provide more than 10 million children with health insurance.
