December 3, 2007 – Democratic Congressional leaders announced on Friday they will be sending President Bush a second bill that expands the State Children’s Health Insurance Bill (SCHIP) by $35 billion over the next five years.
Bush has said he would veto the bill, thus for the second time denying more than 10 million children health insurance. President Bush vetoed an earlier version of the bill. The new bill passed the Senate by a veto-proof 64 – 30 vote, but fell just short of the two-thirds majority needed in the House to override a Bush veto.
