Many Low-Income Children Set to Lose Health Insurance

December 11, 2007 – The Marin Independent Journal recently took a close look at the nearly 3,000 Marin County kids in California who could lose health insurance if the President vetoes expanding funding to the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The article features Adriana and Carlos Pech, who work as a cook’s assistant and Circuit City clerk respectively and cannot afford health insurance for their three children.

Democratic Congressional leaders are set to send President Bush a second bill that expands SCHIP by $35 billion over the next five years. Bush has said he would veto the bill, thus for the second time denying more than 10 million children health insurance. President Bush vetoed an earlier version of the bill. The new bill passed the Senate by a veto-proof 64 – 30 vote, but fell just short of the two-thirds majority needed in the House to override a Bush veto.
