Funding Still Needed for SCHIP

September 03, 2008  - While public pressure has led to the reversal of a directive that would have hurt many middle income families seeking health care for their children, the Bush administration has yet to expand funding for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) ruled in May the Bush administration violated federal law by limiting individual states’ ability to provide health coverage to moderate-income children. The directive was reversed last week.

The President has twice vetoed legislation that would have expanded SCHIP by $35 billion over the next five years, continuing health care coverage for more than six million mostly low-income children while providing coverage for an additional four million children.

The next Congress will likely take up SCHIP again next year.
