George Kourpias, president of the Alliance for Retired Americans since it began in 2001 has announced his retirement. During his tenure the membership of the alliance grew to 3.5 million. Standouts of his work include stopping George W. Bush's attempt to privatize Social Security and the 72 percent turnout for Barack Obama by the union retirees in 2008. Prior to his service he was the president of the IAM.
As his replacement the Alliance’s executive board is expected to name Barbara Easterling, the first female officer of the AFL-CIO, as the organization’s new president.
