What Your Local News Won’t Tell You

Which of the following developments received coverage by national news media?

  • TCU and other unions in its Coalition ask the NMB to release them from mediation while railroads continue to amass record profits.
  • House Republicans attack Amtrak, with proposals to cut funding and privatize the Northeast Corridor.
  • TCU reaches excellent contracts on Boston commuter road MBCR

Correct answer: None of the above received even a mention by the mainstream press  or cable networks.

TCU’s web page is the only source for news that directly impacts our members’ working lives.

You already know that. You’re visiting the web page.

But too many of our members don’t. And as a result they are bombarded by the one-sided anti-union messages that prevail in most mass media. They never get honest information about the many struggles that TCU and the rest of the union movement engage in on their behalf.

That is why we have created Flash News, a round-up of top news of interest to TCU members, which we email every Friday to all officers and members who have signed up to receive it.

Flash News is concise and easy to read. It has articles on the important events of the previous week, ranging from updates on contract negotiations; Amtrak, commuter and transit funding; railroad retirement news; legislative and legal developments affecting the specific industries and employers TCU members work for; and stories about individual members, especially those in need.

And when breakthrough events occur, we don’t wait for Flash News – we email Special Alerts to everyone on the Flash News list.

As a TCU web page visitor, hopefully you have already signed up to receive Flash News. If you haven’t, signing up is easy. Just click this link.

But we’re asking you to do more. President Scardelletti has launched a campaign in every local to establish Flash News committees to sign up every member. You can go to the next union meeting and volunteer to be on the committee. Or you can just encourage your coworkers to visit this web page and sign up by clicking the prominent Flash News link.

Once signed up, every member will be tuned in to the most important events affecting their working lives. The news will come to them. Instead of relying on the office or shop rumor mill, they will have access to the real facts. They will know where we stand in national negotiations. They will know what’s brewing in Congress that directly impacts them. They will know how Amtrak and commuter lines are faring under blistering budgetary attacks.

In short, they will learn the real facts relevant to their work lives. In launching this campaign, President Scardelletti said, “We want TCU members to be the best informed in the labor movement. We are facing difficult struggles at the bargaining table and in Congress. We will only prevail because of the strength of our membership. And to be strong, they need to know what’s going on. Knowledge is power. ”
