District 34 Supports Troops

District 15 Receives Voluntary Recognition At Four Locations
District 15 recently won voluntary recognition for new IAM members at four locations. Drivers for New England Motor Freight at terminals located in Chicago, IL, Cleveland, OH and Cincinnati, OH, joined the IAM after a majority of employees signed authorization cards.
Penske Fuelers Vote IAM
Workers who fuel trucks at Penske Truck Leasing in Cincinnati, OH recently voted to join the mechanics at that location already represented by the IAM.
Human Rights Day
Monday, December 10th, was International Human Rights Day — commemorating the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The declaration states, “Everyone has the right to form and join trade unions for the protection of his interests.”
Machinists At Nordson Ratify Agreement
Nearly 150 IAM Members at Local 1802 at Nordson Corporation headquartered in Amherst, OH, recently ratified a new agreement.
Pratt & Whitney Machinists Ratify Agreement
More than 4,100 IAM members at Pratt & Whitney (P&W) a unit of United Technologies Corporation, overwhelmingly ratified a three-year contract yesterday. The current contract was set to expire at midnight December 2nd.
P&W Negotiations Resume
Negotiations at Pratt & Whitney (P&W) are set to resume today after the Thanksgiving Holiday.
The talks which re-opened on November 8 following an overwhelming vote to approve strike sanction authority continue to center on job security for the IAM.
Congressman Courtney Visits Local 1871

China's Trade Surplus
A recent issue of Manufacturing & Technology News reports that China’s manufacturing trade surplus with the entire world continues to grow at an alarmingly fast rate. China has posted large trade surpluses with the United States for several years but deficits with other nations. That is changing dramaticly - from $31 billion in 2001 to $277 billion in 2006 and a projected $400 billion for 2007.
McBroom Recognized As IAM Sister Of The Month

IUMSWA Leader Passes
Arthur Batson, Jr., the feisty union leader who was once jailed for battling strike breakers and later served as President of the Industrial Union of Marine Shipbuilding Workers of America (IUMSWA), succumbed to cancer on November 10, 2007 at Veterans Hospital in Long Beach, CA. He was 72.

Members At Pratt Approve Strike Sanction
District 26 members from three IAM Locals in Middletown, East Hartford and Cheshire, CT, overwhelmingly voted to authorize the Negotiating Committee to call for a strike vote if the membership rejects Pratt & Whitney's (P&W) contract offer in December. The strike sanction vote does not, itself, compel a strike.

Eastern Territory Members Win Photo Awards
Each year, the IAM celebrates working men and women in the IAM calendar and each month features a different IAM workplace with photographs of members doing their jobs. The 2008 calendar will contain photos taken in the workplace by IAM members.

BIW to Build First Zumwalt DDG-1000 Destroyer
IAM members of Local S6, District 4 at Bath Iron Works (BIW) in Portland, ME welcomed news recently that their shipyard has been selected to build the Navy’s new Zumwalt-class of advanced destroyers. The flagship DDG-1000 is scheduled to begin fabrication sometime in 2008 with delivery expected in 2013.
