March 2, 2007 - A wave of killer tornadoes and super cell thunderstorms drilled through Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama yesterday, leaving behind at least 20 dead, hundreds injured and millions in property damage. Hardest hit was Enterprise, AL, where a tornado destroyed the town’s high school, killing nine and injuring dozens more.
IAM members from District 75 and Local 2003 in Daleville, AL, assisted in the rescue and recovery effort by helping launch a convoy of MEDEVAC helicopters from nearby Ft. Rucker that ferried injured students from Enterprise High School to area hospitals.
At least nineteen IAM members in Southern Alabama were among the scores of area residents whose homes were totally destroyed or severely damaged by the storm. “Every effort is being made to locate all of our displaced members and determine how we can best help them through this very difficult time,” said District 75 DBR Steve Pridgen.
“Our hearts go out to the victims of this terrible tragedy,” said Southern Territory GVP Bob Martinez. “I have directed the District 75 Business Representatives to work with the Community Services Department to identify IAM members who were affected and to provide assistance as quickly as possible. I want to also especially thank the members of District 75 and Local 2003 who helped others in need, even as the tornado was bearing down on their own homes.”
