Pressure Causes Kansas Outsourcing Conference Cancellation

Mon. April 19, 2010

A conference on outsourcing America’s aerospace industry to Mexico that was to be held in Wichita, KS has been canceled, according to the Wichita Eagle. Wichita is the home of Cessna Aircraft, LearJet, Hawker Beechcraft, Boeing and Spirit Aerosystems, employing thousands of Machinist Union members.

According to the article, the conference, Mexico's Aerospace Industry Conference: Industry Analysis, Off-shore Manufacturing, was to be held April 22.

In the article, Steve Rooney, District Lodge 70 Directing Business Representative, when told of the cancelation, gave a tongue-in-cheek response, “That breaks my heart.”

Wichita is the cradle of American aerospace,” said Southern Territory GVP Bob Martinez. This conference was about stealing good American jobs, and the bottom line is they aren’t welcome in Wichita. The conversation in America needs to be about keeping jobs in America, not sending them to Mexico, and we don’t need carpetbaggers coming in and trying to convince companies to send work to Mexico.”
