Wired to the Prez
2/21/2003
Wired To The Prez IAM District 143 President/Directing General Chair Robert B. De Pace ______________________________________________________________________ Negotiations The week of February 24 will be a determining week for our negotiators on Alaska Airlines. Although Alaska Airlines has unjustly claimed that we have held up the financial end of negotiations. Our negotiators tell me Alaska Airlines still cannot agree on the most simple contract issues. If ASA cannot agree to come to grips on what we need when it comes to contract language, money will be a harder boat to row. We will be realistic. If there is not a marked improvement in Alaska Airlines negotiations next week, District 143 sees no reason to continue, and waste our negotiators time and our money on Alaska Airlines stalling tactics. ASA needs to address our contract issues NOW. If they don't, our members will let them know how they feel. Pledge your allegiance. NWA Negotiations Our elected negotiators are preparing contract proposals and collecting the ever-changing financial data to get ready for Section 6 Openers (exchange of proposals) with NWA on February 25. Our negotiators will be ready. They will be to the point and concise in their dealings with NWA. We all know pension and money will eventually dominate negotiations, but there are contract language concerns that we must address. We believe NWA will give us proposals that will affect our work rules, giving them flexibility to make us at will employees on the clock. As I have said, our negotiators will be ready, to the point and concise. Let's all get ready. Pledge your allegiance. Be Careful! District 143 members have been approached by NWA through company communications asking them to sign up through personal e-mail to receive electronic mailings regarding the ESOP information normally distributed through the U.S. mail. The District cannot tell you not to participate by giving out your personal e-mail to the company, but we'd like to encourage you to think twice before doing so. Having a hard copy within your possession for referral at any time can be invaluable. Also, certain news sources have also put out an electronic "call" for Northwest employees to call or e-mail them regarding their feelings on certain things that have transpired regarding Northwest. In this case, District 143 strongly suggests that you do not participate. We are trying to negotiate contracts for you, and by participating in these types of surveys, it dilutes the negotiating process. Thank you for your understanding on our position regarding these items.
