First African American Woman to Win an Olympic Gold Medal in Freestyle Event

simone manuelSimone Manuel is competing for America in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics in the Women’s 100 meter freestyle event. On the evening of Thursday, August 12, 2016 she accomplished more than she expected by making history and simultaneously, setting an Olympic record. She tied for a gold medal by completing the event in 52.7 seconds. This time breaks the record set earlier in the Rio Olympics.

Records can be beat but, her name will forever be marked in history as she became the first African American Woman to win an Olympic gold medal in a freestyle event. With the Olympics being a world-wide event, she represents America as an example for other Nations. Her hard work and determination will become the stepping stone for many other Women and African American athletes still-to-come. Congratulations Ms. Simone Manuel, you have made America proud.
