Texas holds the key for the Republicans to extend their majority in the House. A controversial redistricting plan pushed by GOP Majority Leader Tom DeLay could cost Democrats four of their current 16 seats in Texas.

32nd District Frost vs. Sessions

The new GOP-drawn districts pit veteran Democrat Martin Frost against Republican Pete Sessions.

The race highlights the GOP effort to knock off powerful Democrats. Frost is the senior Democrat on the House Rules Committee, one of the most powerful committees in Congress.

1st District Sandlin vs. Gohmert

Four-term incumbent Rep. Max Sandlin, Democrat, only has about 40 percent of his old voters in the new GOP-drawn district. His opponent is conservative Republican Louie Gohmert. Sandlin serves on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and is part of the ÒBlue DogÓ Coalition which favors balancing the budget but protecting Medicare and Social Security.

2nd District Lampson vs. Poe

Democrat Nick Lampson is another victim of Texas’ redistricting. Lampson will face Republican Ted Poe. A member of the Transportation Committee, Lampson is a strong supporter of safer air and rail systems and more investment in all modes of travel. Lampson’s district includes the Johnson Space Center, so he is a strong advocate for the nation’s space program.

17th District Edwards vs. Wohlgemuth

Incumbent Democrat Chet Edwards faces Republican Arlene Wohlgemuth in another gerrymandered district. Edwards supports legislation to stop big pharmaceutical drug companies from overcharging Americans for the same drugs sold for less in Mexico and Canada.

Wohlgemuth is drawing fire for authoring a state spending bill that caused more than 140,000 Texas children to lose their healthcare coverage.
