When 19 machinists met in a railroad pit in 1888, they had little idea their new organization would grow into a vibrant union of almost a half-million active members. Today's IAM has a modern headquarters building near Washington, D.C. with a professional staff well prepared for the challenges of the new century.

The IAM's high-tech Headquarters, located in suburban Maryland, is owned by and maintained for every member of the union throughout the USA, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The IAM is active in more than 200 basic industries as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor.

This state-of-the-art facility, located at 9000 Machinists Place, Upper Marlboro, combines style with flexibility and functionality to provide IAM members everywhere with access to the latest in modern data processing and communications capability. IAM Headquarters is approximately 60 miles from the union's award-winning training facility, the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center in Hollywood, MD.

IAM President R. Thomas Buffenbarger reorganized many headquarter departments to provide better service to members, locals and districts and to ensure the IAM is ready for its next one hundred years. Professional, supervisory, technical, stenographic, clerical and maintenance employees assist the union's top elected officers at Headquarters. Together, they serve the needs of IAM members ― wherever they are and in whatever industry, trade or discipline they are employed. In addition, Grand Lodge Representatives ― union members who themselves worked in shops, factories and offices ― assist and advise the International President.
