Statement by R. Thomas Buffenbarger

Following the vote in U.S. Senate to support President Bush's Immigration proposal

"Small men enflame public opinion; great men forge the public policy.

This week, in the United States Senate, some very small men are using the immigration debate to blow hot air across the smoldering coals of racism and bigotry.

Sadly, their primary objective is to reverse their dismal standing in public opinion polls. It won't help. These small men have lost the trust of the American people. By constantly engaging in the politics of cynicism and deceit, they have undermined their own credibility.

These small men are so cynical that they do not want immigration reform. They do not want a bill signing ceremony. They do not want an Act of Congress. All they want is ad copy for this fall's congressional campaigns.

Instead of forging an effective public policy that protects America's borders, provides clear pathways to citizenship and prevents abusive and exploitive practices by employers, these small men seek support for piddling measures that, ultimately, will prove ineffective. Watch what they accomplish, if anything, not what they say. Because to them this is just a mid-term political gambit."

When small men are so desperate to hold onto power, then it is time for solid citizens to say: "Enough is enough. Take your lies, your little gambits and go. Stand aside for those who can and will forge effective public policies on immigration."
