Which of our
cities will they target? Anchorage? Honolulu? Seattle? Portland? San Francisco?
Los Angeles?
In the next 15 years, rogue states with chemical, nuclear or biological weapons will also have missiles capable of reaching American cities. And the likelihood of terrorists acquiring such weapons increases by the day. Prudence dictates that we pursue a national missile defense (NMD) that works. Machinists make things work, and NMD is no exception. As the article “Bombs Bursting In Air” shows, IAM members are deeply involved in the research, development and testing of a national missile defense system. They face huge engineering challenges that many believe can be mastered given enough time. Too bad some politicians want to speed up NMD deployment. They think faster is better. And they are wrong. Complex defense systems like NMD cannot be developed on a political timetable. It takes time to get the engineering right, time to get the system integration right. That’s why the IAM supports a robust, realistic testing program for NMD. Machinists build many of
the weapon systems that defend us today. And we want to be darn sure that
Americans living in the cities most at risk . . . can rest easy in the
future.
