‘Indispensable’: 5 Greenville firefighters honored in retirement

Be it steadying a hose for a fellow firefighter attempting to extinguish a flame or making trip upon trip inside a burning home to ensure everyone has escaped safety, serving as a firefighter is a duty well worth recognition.

Five local firefighters have put in more time than most, with a combined 157 of service with the Greenville Department of Public Safety. They were recognized at the Aug. 16 Greenville City Council meeting.

Young CC-C team absorbs season-opening loss to Saranac

After Carson City-Crystal’s 45-6 season-opening loss to Saranac on Friday evening, new Eagles head coach Ben Brock knows there’s a lot of work to do.

With a young team — including three freshmen and and six sophomores playing on the varsity level — Brock knows his team will be hard challenged in every game. Against Saranac, his team got to see a varsity-level style it needed to see in order to improve.

Trails group working to designate walkable communities

Creating a network of walkable and rideable trails that connects communities is an important goal for the Friends of the Fred Meijer River Valley Rail-Trails. Accomplishing that goal is a journey that’s been six years in the making and continues to this day.

According to Robert Brown Jr., chairman for the Friends, designating walkable communities is just one more piece of obtaining funding for the network of trails that run through Greenville, Belding, Lowell, Saranac and Ionia.

Lakeview Village Council moves forward with township annexation

After six months of planning and reconfiguring, Lakeview is moving forward with a proposed annexation of multiple properties in Cato Township. The annexation would include all properties on M-46 from M-91 to Youngman Road, known as the 46th corridor.

Pear trees leave Stanton residents divided

The suggested removal of Bradford pear trees along Camburn Street has branched out into a larger conversation.

The topic was brought up again during Tuesday’s Stanton City Commission meeting when Stanton resident and former Judge Charles Miel presented several reasons why he believed the trees should remain.

Howard City readies for $1 million Shaw Street project

Businesses on this village’s busiest stretch will remain open throughout a $1 million road project set to begin after Labor Day and be completed by next Memorial Day. The Howard City Village Council in July approved a $1,036,389 bid from CL Trucking & Excavating of Ionia to work on Shaw Street from the village’s traffic light at Federal Road (old 131) west on Shaw to the village limits, which are located just short of the U.S. 131 expressway north and south ramps.

Lower wins 70th District GOP nomination, Albert takes 86th

In the two Republican primary races for local state representatives, one challenger walked away with an easy victory, while the second race proved to be a very close call. Voters elected Jim Lower of Cedar Lake to run for Michigan’s 70th State House District and Thomas Albert of Grattan Township to run for Michigan’s 86th State House District.
