Every worker deserves to come home as healthy as when he or she went to work. The IAM's Occupational Safety and Health Department protects workers' interests by working directly with federal agencies such as the Labor Department, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. But safety laws alone can't protect workers. The IAM believes that educated workers, along with strong safety laws, make safe workplaces.

The Safety and Health Department holds yearly conferences for training in safety issues such as ergonomics; OSHA law; chemical awareness; Canadian safety law; pending safety legislation; and setting up local Safety and Health Committees.

The Corporation for Re-employment and Safety Training (CREST) is a non-profit corporation sponsored by the IAM. The CREST program helps disabled workers return to productive employment and provides safety training services.

The Apprenticeship program seeks to pass on critical workplace skills and create opportunities for employment in American industry.

The IAM Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to members and their children to attain a bachelor's degree or vocational/technical certification. Scholarship recipients are determined in a competition among eligible applicants that is judged by a special Selection Committee.
