Yesterday, the White House detailed its new Veterans Jobs Corps that will put 20,000 vets to work over the next five years. Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki described it as a “bold new effort” to lower the unemployment rate for veterans. And Interior Secretary Ken Salazar suggested that the program – aimed at preserving and restoring national parks -- is based on the FDR-era Civilian Conservation Corps.

Debt Talks Must Address Jobs Crisis

President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner are in private talks to raise the U.S. debt ceiling – the legal limit on borrowing by the federal government. The $4 trillion deal is expected to include a mix of spending cuts and new taxes – but nothing to create jobs.

TAKE ACTION: Tell Congress and the White House a deal forged without measures to spur job growth is a bad deal, doomed from the start. Tell leaders do not ignore jobs and the unemployed.

UCubed Reveals Worst States to be Unemployed In

UCubed released a second edition of its map outlining which states are currently pushing legislation aimed at punishing the unemployed. In addition to highlighting states like Indiana and New Mexico where state lawmakers want to reduce unemployment insurance benefits, subject the unemployed to drug tests, have refused to accept federal unemployment funds, etc., the map now shows exactly how many folks will be affected if the bills become law – a total of over 5.4 million.

UCubed’s Unemployment Brackets Showcase Grim Statistics

As predicted, there were an estimated 28.4 million “upsets” in UCubed’s “Marching to Madness” unemployment bracket tournament. Out of the top 64 metropolitan areas, the city of Fresno, CA, recorded the highest unemployment rating with a whopping 17.2 percent! Las Vegas, NV, followed with 14.9 percent.

UCubed Calls on Governors to Deliver on Jobs Promises

Ur Union of Unemployed is calling on the nation’s newly-elected Governors to cease their campaigns against public employee unions and to focus on creating the jobs their states and citizens so desperately need.

Take action by telling your state leaders that partisan paybacks, attacking unions and cutting much-needed services does not get people back to work. Tell them to focus on creating jobs.

EEOC Probes Jobless Discrimination Claims

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which enforces U.S. laws prohibiting employment discrimination, is investigating recent claims of employers discriminating against the jobless. The commission held a public meeting last week in which it heard testimony from various employment advocacy groups who say some employers are posting want ads with a disclaimer to unemployed applicants.
