IAM Rail Division Condemns DOT Decision to Remove Workers’ Voice from Railroad Safety Advisory Committee

WASHINGTON, D.C., Aug. 15, 2025 – The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union) Rail Division released the following statement condemning the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) decision to terminate the appointments of Josh Hartford, Special Assistant to the IAM Union International President and Don Grissom, TCU/IAM National Vice President and Carmen General President for the IAM Rail Division from the Railroad Safety Advisory Committee (RSAC):

“This decision is a slap in the face to the thousands of rail workers who put their safety and lives on the line daily. Josh Hartford and Don Grissom have been two of the most effective advocates for rail safety on RSAC. They brought decades of rail experience, a strong commitment to protecting rail workers, and a clear understanding of what’s needed to prevent accidents and save lives. Removing them from this committee is not just misguided, it’s dangerous for rail workers and communities.

“We call on the DOT to immediately reinstate Josh Hartford and Don Grissom to the RSAC and to reaffirm its commitment to including front-line workers in every discussion about rail safety. The IAM Union Rail Division will not stand by while the DOT sidelines the voices of the people who help power the rail industry.”

The IAM Rail Division comprises members from the Transportation Communications Union (TCU/IAM) and IAM District 19. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is one of North America’s largest and most diverse industrial trade unions, representing approximately 600,000 active and retired members in the aerospace, defense, airlines, railroad, manufacturing, transit, healthcare, automotive, and other industries.
