Act Now: Sign the Pacific Trade Petition

An overwhelming majority of House Democrats, led by U.S. Representatives Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and George Miller (D-CA), have sent a letter to the Obama administration demanding the provisions and text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), be made public.
President Obama and his trade team are in talks right now with ten other countries to create the TPP free trade agreement. Just like its seriously-flawed predecessors, most notably the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), in which much of the pact is modeled after, the TPP promises to ship more U.S. jobs overseas, undermine Buy American laws and put corporate profits before the interests of working families here and in other countries.
The House letter follows a similar Senate letter sent earlier this week. It also follows legislation introduced in May by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR). Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is also expected to introduce a bill, the 21st Century Trade Agreement and Market Access Act, which aims to reform the U.S trade policymaking process and set binding standards for all future agreements.
The AFL-CIO has begun a petition demanding trade agreements that support creating good jobs in the U.S. and protect workers’ rights here and abroad. Click here to sign it. The petition will be delivered to President Obama and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk on July 8, 2012 at the next round of TPP negotiations in San Diego, CA.
