IAM Organizes Georgia IKEA Workers

On the strength of a 95 percent ‘Yes’ vote, 62 warehouse employees in Port Wentworth, GA became the latest IKEA workers to win IAM representation. IAM District 112 Organizer Rick Harris praised organizing committee members Chad Mock and Terry Miller as key to the success of the organizing campaign.
The vote in Georgia follows the IAM’s ground-breaking campaign in 2011 when about 300 workers at an IKEA supplier plant in Danville, VA voted overwhelmingly for IAM representation. IAM members there approved a three-year contract that included wage increases and a union safety program. In January, 2012, approximately 350 workers at an IKEA facility in Perryville, MD overcame a fierce anti-union campaign to win IAM representation. With help from District 4, workers there are on their way to a first contract.
“Our strong IAM contract at the Danville plant showed other IKEA employees how important it is to have a union contract that protects workers,” said Southern Territory GVP Bob Martinez, Jr. “IAM representation promises and delivers the ability to bargain on working conditions, pay and benefits.
