The Lessons of Boston: Mourn the Victims, Salute the Heroes

In a show of respect for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings, President Obama ordered United States flags be flown at half-staff until sunset on April 20, 2013.

“While we mourn for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings, we are also inspired by the heroic efforts of first responders who instinctively ran toward the chaos and danger instead of away from it. These public service employees – more accurately called heroes – put their lives on the line every single day of the year,” said IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger.

“Despite their sacrifices, more and more police, firefighters and other emergency personnel are losing their right to collective bargaining and being stripped of benefits and pensions in the name of a deeply-flawed austerity agenda. It’s high time our public service employees are treated with the respect they so rightly deserve.”
