Machinists Union Locals Nominate Top Officers

Washington, D.C., January 28, 2014 – More than 1075 local lodges of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) conducted nominations on January 25 for Executive Council positions of International President, General Secretary-Treasurer and, for U.S. locals, eight General Vice Presidents.

The current IAM Executive Council office holders were nominated without opposition by nearly 90 percent of local lodges reporting results. Runoff votes to determine official endorsements at the remaining local lodges with contested nominations will take place on February 8, 2014.

Under the IAM Constitution, a union-wide election is scheduled if a challenger(s) receives endorsements from 25 local lodges. If a challenger fails to garner the required minimum of 25 locals, the incumbents, who have now received more than the 25 required local lodge nominations, will be re-elected.

The IAM is one of the largest industrial trade unions in North America and one of the few where local members directly choose the union’s top officers.
