Brief update:
You may be aware of the line-of-duty deaths of three wildland firefighters late yesterday in northeast Washington. Yesterday’s fatalities make all of us pause and look inward. I’ve asked all of our employees to take a moment today to translate that pause into specific actions that elevate safety in all we do, whether on a fire or supporting the agency in other ways.
We’re pleased training is now underway for an additional 125 firefighters from the Oregon National Guard, and grateful for the assistance we are receiving from more than 30 states across the country. Progress continues to be made on containing Oregon’s major fires, and new fires continue to emerge and be controlled on a daily basis. Firefighting resources are spread thin here in Oregon and across the West.
Over the next 48 hours, weather forecasts call for the kind of conditions we saw last week that led to multiple blow-ups in eastern Oregon. High temperatures and low humidities are pervasive. Our fire managers statewide—working with landowners and cooperators—are preparing local firefighting resources to be ready.
