Machinists Display ‘Union Values’ at Airbus Opening in Mobile

Dozens of IAM members took part in the Airbus 5(k) on the Runway at Brookley Aeroplex in Mobile, Alabama to show their support for the community.

Nearly three dozen IAM members took part this week in activities marking the grand opening of the Airbus final assembly plant on the grounds of the Brookley Aeroplex in Mobile, AL. Wearing t-shirts that declared “Union Values,” the Machinists were a high visibility presence at multiple events, including Saturday’s 5K Race on the Runway. Proceeds for the road race will benefit improvements at nearby Doyle Park.

“This was just another opportunity to get out among the community and show folks what the IAM is all about,” said IAM Grand Lodge Representative Al Granado, who runs the IAM’s offices in Mobile. “We want to see workers here with the type of good jobs that are going to provide a nice boost to their community.”

The IAM represents some 6,000 members in the surrounding area and have been working very closely with members of the Mobile community. Earlier in the week, the IAM visited a host of local schools to drop off supplies such as pencils, pens and notepads. The IAM’s work with local schools and community organizations will continue throughout the year.
