Today, while middle-class Americans watch their dreams disappear, Wall Street and big business are making more money than ever.
You’d think they’d be happy to be the only Americans enjoying the good life. But greed knows no limits. As I write this letter, the big banks, the outsourcers and even foreign interests are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into campaigns to smear and defeat pro-union candidates.
If you think things are bad now, look at what they plan to do if they take control of Congress.
First, they’ll reward their Wall Street pals by putting your Social Security in the stock market! They’ll protect the tax breaks that reward companies for sending our jobs to China. There will be new trade agreements and no more extensions of unemployment benefits. They will let health insurance companies take away your coverage just because you get sick!
Jobs legislation? Canceled. Infrastructure spending? Stopped. Davis-Bacon? Repealed. And guess what else? Another round of tax slashing for the super rich.
Their agenda is cheaper labor, less retirement security, weaker unions and less of anything that actually helps real people get a fair chance in life. They may be making big money now, but they want more. And the money they want is going to come right out of your pocket.
My message is simple. As bad as things are, they can get a whole lot worse. And it is up to you, me and every union member to make sure they don’t succeed. On Tuesday, get mad, and do something about it. Stand up for a fair break for working families. Go to the polls and vote.
Sincerely,
Richard L. Trumka
