Members of IAM Local 933, Tucson, AZ, prepare for contract negotiations with Raytheon while attending the William W. Winpisinger Negotiation Preparation for Bargaining Committees class in Hollywood, MD.

Members of the IAM Local 933, Tucson, AZ, Negotiating Committee met at the William W. Winpisinger (WWW) Center in Hollywood, MD, to train, plan and develop negotiating strategies for upcoming negotiations with Raytheon in October 2015.

The week-long Negotiation Preparation for Bargaining class fit the bill for the committee, providing training in drafting contract language, presenting proposals, collective bargaining tactics and scrutinizing Raytheon’s strengths. Negotiators are trained in communications, strategic planning, legal issues and several other areas. The training culminates in an all-too-real mock negotiation, using real issues the committee will bring to the table, with WWW staff playing the part of company negotiators.

“With the way companies are doing business and treating their employees these days, training of this caliber is a must,” said Local 933 member Wendel Jackson. “The training was intentionally made stressful and suspenseful with little time for completion. That really helped with understanding what going through a negotiation is actually like. The instructors and all of the speakers were not only knowledgeable, but had real world experience to teach from.”

“The Negotiation Prep Training class is a valuable resource that encourages committee members to take an in-depth look at internal and external strengths and weaknesses,” said Dan Aguirre. “The instructor’s vast knowledge of the negotiation process is a tremendous help in preparing negotiators. I am grateful that our committee was able to attend the class 10 months before negotiations. The additional time will help our committee accomplish our goals. Thank you to the WWW staff.”
