ATTENTION TCU MEMBERS
April 30, 2004 – As you may be aware from press reports, two former international presidents of the UTU and two employees under their direction have pled guilty in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas to having engaged in illegal conduct through the receipt of cash payments from certain UTU Designated Legal Counsel. In addition, the recently established UTU Board of Ethics headed by a neutral and former member of the National Mediation Board, the Honorable Joshua M. Javits, ordered that each UTU Designated Legal Counsel declare that neither they nor any member of their firm made cash payments to the four defendants as alleged in the indictment. A number of the attorneys failed to return the declaration and others resigned. Only attorneys who returned the declaration were retained on the UTU list.

We do not believe it is appropriate for TCU to continue to recommend these former UTU Designated Legal Counsel to our members and have so advised each of them by letter dated April 26, 2004. For your ready reference click here to review the TCU revised list of Designated Legal Counsel, minus these firms. TCU has reimbursed those firms removed from the Designated Legal Counsel list the amount of money, if any, contributed for the purchase of advertisements in TCU’s Convention Souvenir Program.
