IAM Chief of Staff to the International President Diane Babineaux, who also heads the IAM’s Women’s and Human Rights Departments, represented the Machinists at the International Women’s Day rally in New York City.
The March 8 gathering in front of the United Nations was part of the 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which lasts from March 4 to 15. The theme of this year’s event was ending violence against women.
“The IAM stands side-by-side with union sisters and women around the world who are fighting for their rights and for their lives,” Babineaux said. “We were honored to represent the interests of women and union members at the Commission on the Status of Women.”
Women in the United States recently scored a legislative victory when a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was signed into law by President Obama on March 7. VAWA provides funding for the prosecution of perpetrators of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Through a variety of events and meetings, the commission is examining many issues important to women, including: violence in the workplace, decent and humane working conditions, and access to public services, education and trade unions.
