Buffenbarger Names Key Transportation Staff

International President Tom Buffenbarger announced Grand Lodge Representative Ira Levy will replace retiring Airline Coordinator Tom Brickner effective August 1, 2013.

“On behalf of myself and the entire Executive Council, I thank Brother Brickner for his 43 years of dedicated service to the IAM,” said Buffenbarger. “He has been a tremendous asset for our membership.”

“Tom is a friend, trusted advisor and a man that I am proud to have served with,” said Transportation General Vice President Sito Pantoja. “He will be missed.”

Ira Levy

Levy began his career in 1976 as a Ramp Serviceman for United Airlines and a member of Local Lodge 1322 in New York City. He then relocated to Denver and became a member of Local Lodge 1886 and was elected as Shop Steward, Ramp Committeeman and Committee Chairman. Levy was elected District Lodge 141 Assistant General Chairman in 1995 and was re-elected each cycle until he was appointed as a Grand Lodge Representative in 2007. Levy has extensive collective-bargaining and organizing experience and graduated with honors with a degree in accounting from Hofstra University and holds a Master’s Degree in Labor Studies from the University of Massachusetts.

Shawn Humpherys

District Lodge 141 Assistant General  Chairman Shawn Humpherys  will be appointed Special Representative to replace Levy in the field effective August 1, 2013. Humpherys began his career in Salt  Lake City as a member of Local Lodge 1287 as a  ramp serviceman at United Airlines and was  instrumental in   organizing the Continental Ramp  and Passenger Service employees. Humpherys has had many roles in the IAM, including President of Local Lodge 1287, Grievance Committee Chairperson and District Lodge 141 Educator.

“We’ve experienced tremendous challenges in the transportation sector in the last decade, including bankruptcies, mergers and representation challenges,” said Pantoja. “I am confident that today’s appointments will enhance our ability to organize new members and face the challenges that are sure to come.”
