The IAM is proud of its role as a fierce advocate for Spanish-speaking working people. As Hispanic and Latinx populations grow in North America, the IAM has adapted to provide services to our Sisters and Brothers.
Every English language class at the IAM’s Southern Maryland educational campus, the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, is also available in Spanish.
Spanish-language programs are coordinated, developed and delivered by a mix of Winpisinger Center staff and the Spanish Language Working Group (SLWG), which is made up of members, officers, activists, staff and retirees from across the IAM who volunteer their time. Since the first Spanish language program at the W3 Center in 2006, nearly 800 members, activists, and officers have completed Spanish-language programs.
The IAM has also stepped up organizing efforts of Latinx workers, most recently welcoming 500 carpenters in Puerto Rico to the IAM.
The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, a national organization representing 2 million Latinx trade unionists, has several IAM officers on its executive board.
“As we mark Hispanic Heritage Month, I want to reaffirm the IAM’s commitment to providing opportunities and resources to our Spanish-speaking members,” said IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. “You are a critical part of the past, present and future of the IAM and we are stronger because of your contributions to our union.”
