Dear IAM Family,
Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in our history, marks the end of slavery in the United States. It’s a day we honor the unwavering spirit of Black Americans who have tirelessly fought for equality since 1866. This historical milestone not only signifies the closing of a dark chapter but also underscores the ongoing battle for democracy and economic justice for all.
Our union, a beacon of change, has played a pivotal role in dismantling societal barriers. Through hard-won collective bargaining agreements, we have empowered workers from diverse backgrounds to achieve economic prosperity and confront threats such as the erosion of voting rights.
Our Human Rights Department has been tasked with focusing on social and economic justice and how identity and lived experiences affect the IAM’s diverse membership. We are determined to safeguard these fundamental rights and strongly oppose any legislation that seeks to stifle the people’s voice.
Our union’s strength, our power, lies in our unity and in the celebration of the vibrant diversity that defines us. For years, we have been at the forefront of the fight for racial justice, both within and beyond the workplace. We understand that racial and economic justice are intertwined, and we are unwavering in our commitment to make racial justice a cornerstone of our collective bargaining efforts. Let us bask in the warmth of belonging and inclusivity as we stand shoulder to shoulder in this fight for justice.
As we observe Juneteenth, let us reflect on our progress and acknowledge the work that still lies ahead to achieve true racial and economic equality for all. Let us also remember that the right to vote is fundamental to this pursuit, and we must remain vigilant in protecting this essential right. This reminder of our ongoing fight for justice, a fight that is not yet won, should ignite our determination and commitment to the cause, reminding us of the importance of our continued efforts.
Sincerely,
Brian Bryant
