IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. has appointed Demetress (Dee) Colbert from District 142 as Education Representative at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center in Hollywood, MD, effective September 1, 2023.
“I couldn’t be more impressed with Dee’s hard work and leadership experience at the Local and District levels,” said Martinez. “That experience plus her deep understanding of membership needs will make her an excellent Education Rep. I have no doubt that she will be successful in this role, and that she will make a positive impact on everyone that attends programs at the Winpisinger Center.”
No stranger to the Center, Sister Colbert has been a participant in Leadership programs, Organizing programs, and the Human Rights program. She has taken her Organizing training back to her Local and District to teach membership how to independently organize events and campaigns. She has used her leadership skills to plan and execute successful collective bargaining agreement campaigns and strikes.
“We are so excited to welcome Sister Dee to the Center,” said Director Mary McHugh. “She will be an asset to the staff and membership. Her unique leadership experience and skillset will compliment those of other our instructors and provide immeasurable benefit to our participants.
Sister Colbert joined Local 846 in 1998, working as a customer service agent for Southwest Airlines. She is currently a member of Local 2446. Her leadership roles at the Local level include Shop Steward, Trustee, Conductor Sentinel, Recording Secretary, and Vice President. She also served on the Negotiation Prep Committee, the Women’s Committee, and as her Local’s CREST Hazmat instructor. Prior to her assignment to the Winpisinger Center, Sister Colbert was an Organizer for District 142.
