District Lodge 142’s Comair Negotiating Committee are the latest members to participate in the intense training offered by the IAM William W. Winpisinger Education & Technology Center’s week-long Negotiation Preparation for Bargaining Committees class.

Mechanics and Related employees at Comair Airlines are the maintenance professionals who take care of a fleet of Bombardier CRJ 50, 700 and 900 regional aircraft. Their contract becomes amendable December 31, 2010, with an early opener beginning September 2. By completing this training, the Comair Committee has the skills and tools needed to deliver the best contract possible for their members.

District 142 General Chairperson Jim Samuel and W3 Instructor Henry Bagwell assume their roles as a Corporate Attorney and an HR Manager during mock negotiations.

“It was amazing to see a group with no negotiating experience transform into a team during the course of the training,” said District 142 General Chairperson Jim Samuel. “This became very evident when we threw them for a loop during mock negotiations. Instructor Henry Bagwell utilized my services as his ‘corporate attorney’ against the Committee, and they performed extremely well.”

Each Negotiation Preparation for Bargaining Committees class is customized for specific bargaining units. Committee members learn strategic planning, contract costing, how to draft contract language and present proposals, how to develop communications and member mobilization plans and other constructive training.
