Connecticut Local 743 Raises Nearly $80K for Guide Dogs


IAM Local 743 and area supporters of Guide Dogs of America held a pair of fundraisers which totaled nearly $80,000 for the charity.

A pair of fundraisers put on by IAM Local 743 netted nearly $80,000 for the IAM’s favorite charity, Guide Dogs of America.

More than 70 riders took part in Local 743’s fifth annual “Ride for Guides,” which raised over $9,000 for the New England Guide Dogs of America chapter.

A packed field of 156 golfers turned out for the 14th annual Guide Dogs of America Golf Tournament at Oak Ridge Golf Club in Feeding Hills, MA. IAM Local 743, UTC Aerospace Systems, the United Way and the New England Guide Dogs of America chapter sponsor the GDA golf tournament each year.

More than 110 people took part in Local 743’s fifth annual “Ride for Guides” motorcycle poker run. Good weather made for a scenic 80-mile ride from the Local 743 union hall to the Polish National Home in Windsor Locks, CT. Riders made pit stops at local businesses to draw playing cards for a chance to win a high-definition TV.

“There is a tremendous amount of preparation and hard work for events like these,” said Local 743 President Dianna Koch. “We sincerely appreciate everyone who participated, and especially the help we received from the many volunteers who made the ride and barbeque better than ever.”

Guide Dogs of America provides guide dogs and instruction in their use, free of charge, to blind and visually impaired men and women from the U.S. and Canada so that they may continue to pursue their goals with increased mobility and independence.
