House passes spending bill

“The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a short-term continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown and continue funding federal programs through the spring of 2017.

“Federal government operations are currently funded through Friday and would partially shut down without the bill’s passage.

“‘This legislation is necessary to continue vital government programs and services, like our national defense,’ House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Kentucky) said in a statement. “It keeps the lights on in our government, preventing the uncertainty and harm of a government shutdown,” he added.

“The measure, which funds the federal operations through April 28, now goes to the Senate for a vote.

“‘ commend the House for passing it today, and urge the Senate to send it to the President’s desk for his signature as soon as possible,’ Rogers added.
