WASHINGTON, Dec. 29, 2024 – Brian Bryant, International President of the 600,000-member International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union, issued this statement following the passing of Former President Jimmy Carter:
“Our Union joins the nation in mourning the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. Throughout his life, Carter was a champion for peace, humanitarian efforts, and human rights.
‘President Carter earned the endorsement of the IAM at our 1976 Grand Lodge Convention in Hollywood, Fla., reflecting our shared commitment to a brighter future for working families.
“While IAM leadership was critical of certain policies during President Carter’s tenure, including the deregulation of the airline and rail industries, we recognized his initial efforts to introduce a labor reform bill that would have strengthened protections for union workers.
After leaving the White House, President Carter founded the Carter Center, which helped fight for global peace, eradicate diseases worldwide, and build affordable housing through Habitat for Humanity. His work has inspired millions worldwide, and his legacy will forever remind us of the power of service to humanity.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Carter family and all who mourn his loss.”
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers is one of North America’s largest and most diverse industrial trade unions, representing approximately 600,000 active and retired members in the aerospace, defense, airlines, railroad, transit, healthcare, automotive, and other industries.
