IAM District 19 Leadership Wins Paid Sick Leave for Norfolk Southern Employees

IAM District 19 leadership has reached another historic victory by securing four paid sick days for all IAM members at Norfolk Southern.

“I know paid sick days is an important issue for our members.  I am honored to be able to obtain this milestone for our members and will continue to fight for a better quality of life for them,” said Lead General Chairman J. Orwan.

Starting in December of last year, District 19 set up meetings with NS to talk about sick days and quality of life issues. Through in-person meetings and conference calls, District 19 leadership was able to achieve paid sick days and protect our members’ seniority for the future.

District 19 is still persistently and aggressively negotiating per diem and travel agreements for its Roadway Equipment mechanics even though NS is being resistant to enriching the quality of life of our members. District 19 will not stop fighting until changes are obtained.

This agreement is another of several recent agreements made for sick days on other Class One and Short Line Railroads. We are moving forward every day with the goal of providing sick days to each of our members.

“Please join me in congratulating James Orwan and his Committee on this historic sick leave language,” said IAM District 19 Assistant President and Directing General Chair Andrew Sandberg.
