The IAM is conducting the Local Lodge History Project at the Winpisinger Center this year during the week of June 11-16, 2017. This is an opportunity to be part of archiving the rich history of your lodge.
In tradition with past sessions, participating Locals are asked to recruit two retirees and one active member from your local or district lodge. Attendees will document your lodge history and the role it played in the labor movement. Members attending from across the U.S. and Canada will share the rich history of the IAM, along with the successes and struggles of their lodges in the labor movement.
There will be distinguished guests affiliated with labor history to facilitate the archiving of your lodge’s history. Past instructors in the program include: Archivist Traci Drummond, the IAM’s official archivist at the Southern Labor Archives at Georgia State University; Rachel Bernstein, Historian and Archivist of the Wagner Library at New York University; and Dr. Charles Micallef, Historian, Labor Educator and Retired IAM Director.
“Many of our members do not know the story of their locals and districts,” said Micallef. “Knowing where we have been often shines a light on future paths. The objectives of this program is teaching teams from locals or districts to research their history, disseminate their history, make connections with the archives and preserve their history. We know a great deal of the history at the International level and little of history at the local level.”
